Ultrasound at days 24-30 is the most reliable; from day 45 an X-ray can count fetuses. Early abdominal palpation is only a guess.
What are the signs labor is near?
About 24 hours before delivery body temperature drops ~1°C, and the mother refuses food, nests and licks her vulva frequently — be ready to stay nearby.
