Bleeding first aid

The core of bleeding control is direct pressure. Most wounds clot after 5 minutes of firm pressure; spurting or unstoppable bleeding needs immediate transport.

⚠️ 🚨 Emergency

Wear gloves or use a clean plastic bag first — pet blood can transmit disease.

🚨 First-aid steps

  1. 1Press clean gauze or a towel firmly on the wound for 5 minutes without peeking
  2. 2If blood soaks through, add new gauze on top — don't remove the first layer
  3. 3For limb bleeding, add a pressure bandage above the wound, releasing for 1 minute every 10
  4. 4Impaled object: don't pull it out — stabilize it and transport
  5. 5Once bleeding stops, clean with saline and cover with a dressing

⛔ Never do this

  • ✕Don't pour alcohol or hydrogen peroxide into open wounds (painful, tissue-damaging)
  • ✕Don't use a tourniquet without professional guidance (tissue death risk)
  • ✕Don't place cotton wool directly on wounds (fibers stick)

🏥 Go to the vet immediately if:

  • ⚠Bleeding continues past 5-10 minutes of pressure
  • ⚠Spurting or welling blood
  • ⚠Wounds into muscle/bone, penetrating bite wounds
