What to do during a seizure
During a seizure the pet is unconscious but will not «swallow its tongue» — your job is to keep it safe and record key information for the vet.
⚠️ 🚨 Emergency
Seizing pets bite indiscriminately — never put hands near the mouth.
🚨 First-aid steps
- 1Clear furniture and sharp objects; switch off power nearby
- 2Dim lights, keep quiet — don't stroke or call
- 3Film the whole episode (extremely valuable for diagnosis)
- 4Note the start time and duration
- 5Afterwards, let it recover slowly in a quiet spot with soft reassurance
- 6Over 5 minutes, or repeated seizures within 24 hours — go immediately
⛔ Never do this
- ✕Don't put anything in the mouth (pets don't swallow their tongues)
- ✕Don't restrain or hug the seizing animal
- ✕Don't offer food or water right after (swallowing hasn't recovered)
🏥 Go to the vet immediately if:
- ⚠A single seizure over 5 minutes (status epilepticus)
- ⚠Cluster seizures within 24 hours
- ⚠First-ever seizure, or prolonged confusion afterwards
